Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several access tunnels down to the site... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - established militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among a great many British personnel on duty over the holidays. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
