EU Maritime Forces Free Sailors Following Somali Pirate Attack on Vessel

European Union maritime units have safely freed two dozen crew members from a Malta-registered oil tanker that was attacked by sea robbers off the coast of Somalia.

The Hellas Aphrodite, which was carrying fuel from Indian ports to South Africa, was taken over on Thursday when armed pirates opened fire with automatic weapons and explosive projectiles before boarding the ship.

The crew secured themselves inside a fortified citadel while the attackers took control of the ship.

Mission Accomplished

A naval vessel, functioning under the European Union's maritime security operation, arrived at the tanker on the following day. Elite military units entered the craft and discovered all 24 crew members safe and sound.

"The crew is safe and no injuries have been reported. Throughout the incident, they remained in the secure area in direct contact with the operation," authorities announced, adding that a "demonstration of power" had prompted the attackers to abandon the ship before the naval unit reached the location.

Ongoing Threat

Officials emphasized that the danger level in the area "continues to be serious" as the armed groups are still in the area.

The mission involved a aircraft, drone and reconnaissance plane. Shortly before, a different vessel in the identical region was targeted by a small speedboat but managed to evade it.

Return of Maritime Crime

This event represents the most recent in a spate of attacks that have raised alarms about a renewal of maritime crime in the region.

Such activity had declined when global maritime security and security measures were implemented after reaching their highest point more than a ten years past.

Nevertheless, attacks by Yemen's Houthi rebels on ships in the Arabian Sea, which have been conducted for the recent period, have caused ships to be diverted through the African coastline - opening up new opportunities for Somali gangs.

Incident Data

  • Multiple piracy cases of maritime crime occurred off the shoreline of the Somali region in the previous year
  • Several vessel takeovers were recorded among these events
  • Only one incident of maritime crime was reported in 2023

Maritime security experts continue to monitor the situation as shipping companies navigate these potentially hazardous waters.
