Hazbin Hotel's Showrunner Unveils Rosie and Alastor's Origin Tale Serves as a Huge Teaser for Season Three
Dedicated viewers of the series at last received a long-awaited backstory in season 2's episode 4, titled “It's a Deal.” This installment is likely to prompt a lot of discussion and pose many questions about the essence of one particular demon Overlord who appears significantly stronger than anyone before understood. The new revelations include a look into the mortal existence of a beloved character before his demise and sentence to Hell.
A Significant Hint for Future Seasons
The series creator disclosed an inside detail about “It's a Deal” – it acts as a major tease for the third season. Additionally, she offered more insight into the methodology of creating the human versions of her demonic cartoon figures.
Warning: Spoilers for episode 4 of Hazbin Hotel, season 2.
In the episode, a look back reveals that popular character Alastor the Radio Demon was a serial killer in his human life. Being aware he was destined for Hell, he established communication with the afterlife beforehand to secure a powerful role in Hell. The charismatic leader, the charismatic leader the cannibal faction in Hell, promised Alastor he would become “the strongest Sinner in Hell” in exchange for his soul.
This raises the question: In what way is Rosie sufficiently strong to raise Alastor above all other Sinner Demons?
“The Rosie and Alastor deal is the first stepping stone in a larger narrative that involves so much, moving into season 3,” the creator explains. “Clearly that is a perfect question: How is she so strong? The answer might be many things, but the answer is in season three. I'm very excited for people to witness it.”
There’s no telling how long the audience will have to wait for Hazbin Hotel’s next season. The studios have green-lit the third and fourth seasons, but the showrunner often remarks that animation is a time-consuming endeavor, and later seasons have no release dates yet. Still, she states withholding on specific information is an important part of keeping season 2’s attention where it belongs.
“The challenge of any agreement with demons, or stories that have mysteries, is giving people just enough information to be like, Something's up here, and then revealing that as we go, and allowing that be satisfying,” she comments. “So I am quite eager.”
Questions Answered in Season 3
The showrunner promises that the upcoming season will tackle the queries followers have been posing, such as why the cannibal leader ordered Alastor to disappear for seven years, which weakened his power in the infernal realm.
“The entire seven-year span, and the pacts these humans are doing, and all that — it contributes to a larger story,” she says.
In the meantime, the origin story episode offers another glimpse into what the core cast of Sinner Demons looked like as mortals, the second after viewing Sir Pentious’ historical mortal appearance in episode 2. The creator explains that significant consideration was put into the visual creation of these forms.
“The mortal forms of the characters carry so much weight,” she notes. “They range from looking quite distinct from their demon form to looking almost identical. With Pentious, the initial design we see, there was some internal discussion internally between going with a design that symbolizes the personality, as opposed to selecting something that's historically correct. We opted for creating a design that just seemed like it was him.”
She mentions the biggest debate over Pentious’ human design was his long hair: “We were like, ‘No one typically had long hair of that style in Victorian-era London.’ But at the same time, we believe the outline is so important, and we also just thought he looked good. We were like, ‘This seems correct.’ We kind of gave the excuse that he's a hermit, so he just allowed his hair to lengthen. So there is always a solution. As we design the mortal forms of these characters […] it's such a fun thing to investigate and figure out. I'm excited for people to see more of the appearances of the human versions.”
