Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that individuals who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using such treatments must be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a reversion to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Experts suggest the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified weight return.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a intense return of hunger.

"It felt as if something that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described a patient.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians caution that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle changes.
