Major Online Failure Impacts Numerous Online Platforms and Applications

A large-scale online failure has impacted numerous websites and applications globally, as users noting troubles getting online following issues at the online infrastructure platform.

The disrupted services encompass the social media app Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, along with multiple Amazon-operated operations like its key e-commerce site and the Ring doorbell company.

Across the United Kingdom, Lloyds bank was affected along with its subsidiaries Halifax and the Scottish bank, while there were additional accounts of issues using the the tax authority site on Monday morning. Also in the UK, many Ring customers took to social media to complain their security devices were malfunctioning.

Solely in the United Kingdom, notifications of problems on individual applications totaled the tens of thousands for every service.

The company stated that the outage originated in the Atlantic coast of the United States at Amazon Web Services, a section that provides vital web infrastructure for many companies, who rent out resources on AWS infrastructure. Amazon Web Services is the world’s largest web hosting system.

Just after midnight (PDT) in the United States (8am BST), the company announced “increased problem frequencies and delays” for AWS services in a zone on the eastern US of the America. The ripple effect was seen to hit apps around the world, and the problem monitoring service showing issues with the same sites in various regions.

Cisco’s Thousand Eyes, a tool that reports on online failures, further indicated a surge in issues on the start of the week, with many of them situated in the state of Virginia, the location of the eastern US data center where the company stated the outage originated.
