He has asserted his innocence about the indictments

Previous FBI chief James Comey has pleaded not guilty to making false statements to congressional representatives and impeding a legislative process.

Mr Comey's attorney filed the plea acting as his counsel in a national courtroom in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday morning.

His attorney declared he would try to have the legal matter dismissed for several factors including that his the accused, a opponent of former President Trump, was being singled out.

Mr Comey was charged shortly after Donald Trump urged his attorney general to take action against him.

Judicial Process

At the proceedings on Wednesday, Comey's lawyer Patrick Fitzgerald advised the magistrate they aimed to present various motions to terminate the case before a court case, claiming the legal action was spiteful and that a government lawyer was improperly appointed to assume control of the case.

Mr Comey's proceedings was first handled by the original attorney, who left his position under pressure from Donald Trump after his examination into another political adversary - the New York official - failed to initiate prosecution.

Judicial Environment

Mr Comey seemed in good spirits as he entered the courtroom on Wednesday, speaking with his legal team and making jokes. He was joined by his partner, Patrice Failor and child Maureen Comey, a government attorney who the previous administration dismissed.

Following the reading to the judge recite his legal protections and the two counts against him in the courtroom on mid-week, James Comey was asked if he grasped the charges.

"Absolutely your honour. Appreciate it," he stated to the judge.

Background Context

The former director was the FBI Director from four years and was dismissed about four months into the former president's initial presidency as national leader. At the time, the director was directing an examination into Russian election interference and whether there were any connections between Russia and Trump's campaign.

Throughout his leadership, the director triggered a backlash from Democrats when he declared just days before the 2016 election that he was investigating political contender the candidate's use of a non-governmental email account. Legal actions against Hillary Clinton were never brought, causing disapproval from conservative politicians as well.

Ongoing Accusations

Government attorneys allege James Comey provided false information to the legislature during a congressional hearing in September 2020 when he was being questioned about both the previous examination as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They claim he deceived the upper house by stating he had not authorized an individual at the FBI to release to media organizations details about the FBI investigations.

Prosecutors also accuse Mr Comey of "improperly attempting to influence, block and slow" the legislative group by providing untrue information to it.

Individual Responses

Via social media Mr Comey shared to his social media after he was indicted, he stated he was wrongly accused and charged the former president of behaving like a "tyrant".

"We have been aware for considerable time that there are costs to opposing Mr Trump," he said. "We refuse to live on our bended knee."
"I have done nothing wrong," he stated further. "So let's have a court case."

These allegations against Mr Comey surfaced after Trump published on digital channels insisting on his top legal official, Pam Bondi, charge the former director and others.
