The Generosity of Strangers: How a Person I Barely Knew Assisted Me Land the Role That Changed My Life

In the late 1980s, I set out on a budget travel adventure to Europe with a friend. Since my friend was interested in enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had planned a 14-day stopover there on the way to London.

We arrived at the postgrad residence, a large multi-story edifice on the UWS called International House. Once we unpacked, we headed straight to the canteen, where we got some food, took a seat, and began chatting with other diners.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He wanted to know what I did, and I shared that I had newly finished with a science degree and had been conducting research using an electron microscope.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – close to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He recommended that I ought to seek a job with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, explaining that I was about to fly to Europe and, additionally, I lacked a US visa.

The following day I toured the city, coming back to the dining hall that night. The man from Iraq walked over to me and informed me that he had arranged an interview for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately informed my prospective employer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a place where opportunities abound – she said: “That can be arranged. How soon can you begin?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I held that position for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I was granted no-cost classes at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a postgrad program in international relations.

I never saw that student again and I am unaware of his identity, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the bravery or self-assurance to approach someone at an elite institution and seek a position. Additionally, I had long dreamed to pursue education overseas, but lacked the financial means without that educational benefit.

Critically, that job in New York resulted in a position in Switzerland where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I currently share four wonderful sons and daughters. That encounter altered everything. That kind stranger redirected my path in life, and I’m forever grateful.
