In a first day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” America's largest city, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious beginning to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The 34-year-old political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
• A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with concern from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly productive.

The Core Challenges of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing basic services: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and making sure reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
